An inspiring aunt

There would never be enough space or time to recall my memories or describe my impression of the distinguished Dr. (Mrs) Okoye, fondly known to us that were close to her as Aunty Uju or 'Omelora'. Omelora was indeed one in a million, who was so full of life and gave herself to almost everyone she came across. Omelora has always been a part of my extended family, being my father's younger brother's wife, but I got to know her very well and therefore understand how exceptional she was when I moved to Abuja in 1999 for my National Youth Service Corps programme. Omelora's residence in Abuja was always my home away from home and I was always welcome there anytime. She had a way of relating with me as well as my friends in a unique way, so much so that she knew how to come down to our level and relate with our interests and conversations as though we were all of the same age, whilst at the same time knowing when it was time to switch roles and play a much more experienced, motherly and advisory role. She was indeed a wonderful host to almost anyone who set foot in her house and I still doubt to this day if there are many other places in Abuja where I was sure to enjoy some of the best Onogbu, ora or vegetable soup. In November 1999, to my utmost surprise, Omelora organised a surprise birthday party in my honour, something that I will remember as long as I live. One of the things I admired most about Omelora was her work ethic. She was a hard worker and believed that anything worth doing, has to be done very well. That is what drove her from her humble beginnings as a mere teacher in an Enugu school to pursuing and completing her degree, post graduate and doctorate at the prestigious University of Nigeria. In spite of those accomplishments, she remained humble and very eager to learn. She understood that no one person could know everything and therefore would admit she was in search of information or knowledge when necessary. Omelora's has left a legacy and her life is testament that is indeed right for us to have an ambition, but we also to back up that ambition with hard work, but most importantly she has taught us how to reach out and care for others. Omelora may you rest in peace until we all meet again to part no more.
